Once again I am rallying my family and friends across the globe for my team, Maria’s Clan Spread Smiles, for our 6th AuroraWALKS, Saturday, April 13th, benefitting Aurora Day Camp, Georgia’s only full summer day camp for children with cancer and their siblings, ages 3 1⁄2 – 16.
I have been the Development Director for Aurora for nearly five years and I am very blessed to work with this great team and such a powerful mission. We provide a magical camp and year-round in-hospital programs, ALL COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE! Every summer when I take donors and sponsors for Camp tours, I am beyond amazed at the endless energy of our campers, and how much fun they have every minute of every day, despite the 90 degree heat!
In 2023 I was the highest fundraising staff team in the 10 Sunrise walks last year, and in the top three teams in Atlanta. As I have shared before, I always felt so lucky in my life and my luck rather ran out when I was diagnosed with cancer, again, in March 2020. The Aurora team supported me through two years of reoccurrences, several surgeries, toxic cancer treatments and grueling side effects. I have been cancer free for 2 ½ years now, still loving life and so enjoying my first grandchild, Grant, Cara's son, now 15 months old, whom I see a lot!
Our 7th summer camp will open in June with a record number of OVER 200 campers. Aurora is not about cancer – it’s about fun. Children fighting cancer and siblings laughing every day, a priceless gift to any family. Approximately 58% of our campers are under age 10, and 37% are younger than 7 years old. There are no other programs like these in Atlanta.
