Legends. These are people that have made their own path. No path is alike because no one person is the same. Legends are not born, but they are molded and created by circumstance, experience, and choices. Every choice you make has a ripple effect. Life will throw you curveballs, and legends are the people that accept this, learn, constantly improve, and keep going.
I have had the honor to grow up beside one. My brother, Alex Levy was not born a legend, but he sure did grow into one. Whether it was his family, friends, or work, he always put others before himself without asking anything in return. We grew up in a family that was different from the start. Our sister, Lauren was born with a physical and mental disability. We were the atypical family from the start, but that did not change the love we had for her or within our family.
In 2009, Alex was looking to return to his roots. We grew up attending day camp and Alex found Sunrise Day Camp and their mission resonated with him. He always had a passion with working with children and he knew what cancer can do to a family since our father passed away from it two years prior in 2007. He fell in love with the mission of Sunrise and the Sunrise community.
He returned each summer to be with the kids and when he put on that blue shirt, he supported his staff just as much. He lead by example with true compassion and empathy. When he stepped foot on the grounds of Sunrise, he put Sunrise first. He passed on this love and lessons to many staff members and kids. Many of these campers are now part of the Sunrise staff.
If Alex was a part of your life, I urge you to walk with us. He would love to rally his people to support a cause that was so near and dear to his heart. At his last summer at Sunrise, he played the Genie and granted as many wishes as he could. Let us grant a wish in honor of Alex and walk with him for Sunrise.
