Meet Our Camp Ambassador

The Nowinski Family

It was just another diaper change for Teddy, at 6 weeks old, when I felt a small lump on his inner thigh. The doctors didn't have any answers at the time and told me to monitor it for changes. Two weeks later, I found another lump near the first. I contacted Lutheran General Hospital for a consult, but it was 2 weeks away. By the time we went to the appointment, Teddy had over 14 little lumps all over his body. We were told that Teddy needed to be admitted to the hospital immediately for testing because of how large his liver had swollen. The next day, the doctors told us that he was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma. Teddy started treatment a few days later.

Our world was turned upside-down and we had to replan our lives ahead. Logan, who was only a toddler, spent extra time with his Dad and grandparents. Teddy would go off on “adventures” for testing, scans, and treatment. After 8 cycles of chemo and ringing the bell, at only 8 months old, Teddy was in remission.

Last spring, we heard about Sunrise Day Camp-Chicago and thought it would be great for Teddy and his brother. I was blown away with how amazing the whole experience has been! It brought so much relief and joy knowing that our boys were having fun, learning new things, making great friends, and being kept safe and healthy.

This summer, my daughter was able to join in on all of the fun! The experiences and support has been beyond my imagination. The best part about the camp is seeing them having a great time being kids and the love that they have for each other (campers and staff). We look forward to continuing to spend our summers with all of these amazing people! Join us at SunriseWALKS on September 8!
