Horizon Day Camp means so much to our family that it is hard to put into words. When Oliver was diagnosed with leukemia in November 2018 our world was changed forever. After several months of intense treatment and a whirlwind of hospital stays, clinic visits, and chemotherapy, things seemed to settling a little bit. That is when I met Fran, a Horizon on Wheels volunteer, who was at clinic one day when Oliver had an appointment. She told me all about Horizon Day Camp and I knew I wanted the boys to have that experience. Oliver's oncologist gave us the go ahead and the boys rode the bus to Baltimore together in June 2019. They had an incredible summer full of friendship, sugar, and fun. In 2020 the boys attended camp virtually which was fine but just not the same. This summer the boys were able to attend Horizon in person again. It was an incredible experience for them. They had both been at home all year and had had minimal interaction with peers. Camp Horizon was seven weeks of magic. They loved every minute of it and even wished they could go on weekends. We are so grateful for Horizon and all that they offer for children with cancer and their siblings.
HorizonWALKS is an annual walkathon event that raises critical funds and awareness for Horizon Day Camp, Maryland’s first full-summer day camp for children with cancer and their siblings, offered completely free of charge. Horizon Day Camp, along with their Year-Round Programming and In-Hospital Recreational Activities, brings back the simple joys of childhood to local Maryland and Washington, D.C. area children impacted by pediatric cancer.
This year, HorizonWALKS is YOUR WAY! All participants are encouraged to use their creativity to fundraise, spread awareness and participate in HorizonWALKS 2021 in any way that is fun, meaningful and safe for them.
HorizonWALKS will be held in October 2021 and will consist of an online Opening Ceremony, followed by a walk with family and friends in your own community.
