You don’t join a walk-a-thon because you love to walk, you join because you love someone associated with the cause it supports. I got involved with Sunrise because a dear friend of mine was affected by pediatric cancer. His pain was my pain and I wanted to do anything I could to support him. I didn’t know that his cause would soon become mine. As crappy as pediatric cancer makes me feel is how AMAZING being involved with Sunrise makes me feel.
It started by attending one Sunrise meeting and learning about all of the amazing things they do. Then Parker decided to dedicate his Birthday to raising enough money to send a child to Sunrise Day Camp--$6,000. Parker’s fundraiser got all of my friends and family involved, but I wanted to do more. I realized at Northwestern Mutual, I had access to an amazing resource. We started on the local level and then expanded firm-wide. Last year Northwestern dedicated its golf outing to Sunrise and we raised $24,000! That’s four kids sent to camp. Four kids whose focus changed from hospital beds and needs to swimming pools and paint brushes, who got to enjoy fun-filled days at camp while having the comfort of their own beds at night. This year my personal goal is to raise $36,000 to send six kids to camp and I appreciate all the support I can get. Together, we really can bring back the joys of summer to children with cancer.
