Dear friends and family,
As many of you know, for the past two years Sophia has been attending Sunrise Day Camp–Pearl River, the world’s only full summer day camp for children with cancer and their siblings, provided completely free of charge.
This year, Sophia, David, Emily and I are thrilled to be the Camp Ambassadors for the 2020 SunriseWALKS Virtual Campaign & Celebration event, which helps raises critical funds and awareness for camp!
In 2017, when we heard the words “your child has cancer” our life was turned upside down. We could not eat or sleep, and there were endless days full of fear. Sophia’s treatments were not easy on her and we could see her little body slowly deteriorating. Seeing Sophia who was always so lively and active become so exhausted that she could not walk or even get out of bed was heartbreaking.
Thankfully, during treatment we learned about the incredible work of Sunrise. They have a special program called Sunrise on Wheels, where once a week Sunrise volunteers would come into the hospital and simply play with Sophia, getting her mind off treatment. That’s where Sophia fell in love with the people of Sunrise and camp itself. The summer of 2019 was Sophia’s first time attending Sunrise Day Camp. I will not lie, I was just as afraid as she was to let her go off on her own after being with her 24/7 through most of her treatment, but we did and best decision we’ve ever made. Sophia’s favorite part of camp has been being able to dip her head in the water and not being afraid to learn how to swim. The wonderful people at Sunrise did that – they put a smile on her little face and helped her overcome some of her fears – and we are forever grateful.
Fast forward to this past January, Sophia took her last chemo pill and is currently in remission. This road has not been easy by any means, but through it all, we could not be more thankful and blessed to come out stronger than ever. We never gave up hope that our daughter would come out victorious from all of this.
While the world has been very uncertain for all us – one thing has been constant – Sunrise. Sophia enjoyed participating in the dynamic virtual camp program this past summer, where she engaged in all of the fun activities online. She was able to “see” her camp friends and counselors every day. There is nothing I loved more than hearing her laugh and participate in virtual camp from our own living room. One of her most favorite things to do this summer has been the virtual dancing. You can watch it below!
Here’s where we need your support –
We hope you will consider participating in the 2020 SunriseWALKS event this year by joining or donating to Sophia’s team, Fifi’s Army! Together we can make a difference and give childhood back to children with cancer.
AND... for the remainder of this month, all donations up to $10,000 will be matched by a very generous SunriseWALKS supporter until September 30! Double your donation today by making a donation above. Any amount helps!
