In response to COVID-19, Sunrise has pivoted much of our programming. Starting in March, both our Sunrise on Wheels and year-round recreational programs were paused, fundraising events were postponed and summer 2020 was in question. But to our camp families, Sunrise is a meaningful part of their lives, and so we responded by addressing their emerging needs.

  • Sunrise on Screens: a new video-based YouTube channel filled with games, contests, sing-alongs and special activities was created in order to keep those children who are in the hospital – as well as those at home – connected to Sunrise. The site features new content twice a week.
  • Wheels Up: a new CCTV 30-minute taped program is currently being shown at Memorial Sloan Kettering and will expand to other hospitals going forward.  In the near future we hope to  provide live content thereby further engaging those children spending extended periods of time in the hospitals.
  • As one of our priorities was to remain connected with the patients, we see each week as part of Sunrise on Wheels, we immediately began shipping our weekly "fun-letters" to all our affiliated hospitals. In addition, 19 hospitals have welcomed shipments of our popular Wheels art projects and our new initiative called Surprises from Sunrise – personalized gift bags full of toys, puzzles, games and crafts to individual children in the hospitals.
  • Support from Sunrise:  Was created as an in-depth Information and Referral Service to make sure our families have the tools to navigate these unprecedented times. Sunrise staff called nearly 1,000 families multiple times, to check in on their well-being.  In doing so, we identified myriad concerns we were able to address, including some with food insecurity.  Sunrise was able to provide 47 families (190 individuals) with food gift cards.
  • The Sunrise Experience – Virtual Camp: All 5 US Sunrise Association Days Camps have joined to create a virtual camp platform which will allow the magic of a Sunrise summer to be experienced from the comfort and safety of their homes. Virtual camp will consist of a combination of pre-recorded, hands-on videos and live, interactive sessions with camp friends and counselors.
