Many years ago after we left our close friends kids birthday party we received a Caring Bridge email. If you have never received one of those, count yourself lucky.
On the way home from this party Marcia read the message in shock and disbelief. Visibly upset Ryan asked what it was. Because Carlin and Wade were pint sized she was able to spell it out for him on the drive. "Mathias has C A N C E R". Ryan whispered, "I feel sick.".
Our fun and always warm friends who were noticeably not at the party shared in the message that their son had Osteosarcoma.
These friends were the first to have a child in our group of friends and it was him, Mathias, who had the dreadful disease.
We spoke openly and answered all the questions that both Carlin and Wade had throughout the Giordano's battle. It was important to us that our kids know that ... you just never know. You never know what is in store for you, what others are going through, how life will play out.
Mathias and his family battled for years but unfortunately he passed away in December of 2014 at the age of 13. Carlin, our oldest, is currently that age and we can't help but feel like synchronicity is at play to help us become involved with helping raise funds for this brand new camp opening in Fairfax this summer.
We are walking in Mathias's memory on June 12, 2022.
We ask that you help give summer back to children with cancer and their siblings by making a donation or joining our HorizonWALKS Team, Team Sheehan Squad!
HorizonWALKS is an annual walkathon event that raises critical funds and awareness for Horizon Day Camp – Metro DC, the world’s first full-summer day camp for children with cancer and their siblings, offered completely free of charge . Horizon Day Camp, along with their Year-Round Programming and In-Hospital Recreational Activities, brings back the simple joys of childhood to hundreds of children impacted by pediatric cancer.
This year, HorizonWALKS is YOUR WAY! All participants are encouraged to use their creativity to fundraise, spread awareness and participate in HorizonWALKS 2022 in any way that is fun, meaningful and safe for them.
HorizonWALKS will be held in June 2022 and will consist of an Opening Ceremony, followed by a walk with family and friends, plus fun activities at the National Harbor.
Please consider making a donation today or joining our walk team to help raise much needed funds for these children.
