Dear friends and family,
We are honored to serve as the Event Chairs for SunriseWALKS–Long Island, an event that benefits Sunrise Day Camp–Long Island, the world’s first full-summer day camp for children with cancer and their siblings, offered completely free of charge.
Samantha has been a counselor at Sunrise Day Camp for the past 3 years. To say those years have impacted her life would be an understatement.
During her very first year as a counselor, one of her camper’s sisters, who was just 8 years old, was too afraid to get out of the car each morning. Her siblings would get out with joy and excitement and she would stay in the car – all because she was embarrassed she had lost her hair. Each day Samantha was responsible for greeting this family and welcoming them to camp. Samantha took it upon herself to include this child in her daily greetings and wanted her to know she was loved and that Sunrise is a safe place. Samantha tried day in and day out to convince this girl to give camp a chance.
Then one day, this camper had the courage to get out of the car and enjoy a fun-filled day at camp! Seeing this young girl, who has faced so much in life, smile, run and simply be a kid was so special. This day was one of the best days of Samantha’s summer – a day she will always remember.
Unfortunately, this camper lost her battle with cancer in March 2020. Her siblings still attend camp and their entire family remains part of the Sunrise family.
Sunrise changes the lives of thousands of children and families impacted by pediatric cancer. They bring smiles, joy and love to these children and we are so grateful to be part of this incredible organization.
This year, SunriseWALKS will be held on Sunday, June 27. Because not all 3,000 event participants will be able to gather together, the theme of this year’s event is SunriseWALKS YOUR WAY, meaning teams can fundraise, spread awareness and celebrate the day of the event in their own creative ways.
Our team is still determining what our celebration will look like on June 27, but for now, we are asking you to please help us make a difference in the lives of children affected by cancer by joining our team and/or supporting us with a donation.
