I am proud to have recently joined the board of Horizon Day Camp, Maryland’s only full-summer day camp for children with cancer and their siblings provided completely FREE OF CHARGE. The camp was held at Boy’s Latin School this summer and served 162 campers from 3 ½ to 16 years of age. Free bus transportation is offered to kids locally or reside as far away as Washington, DC.
As a parent I know all too well the impact of hearing your child has cancer. The day camp model is important because it allows children the ability to have fun in a safe camp environment while returning to the comfort of their own homes and beds each night. At the same time, medical treatments can be scheduled around camp participation.
Horizon also understands the importance of including siblings as they too are experiencing anxiety and uncertainty amid a family environment that is in crisis. Everything is free including Transportation, Reunion gatherings throughout the year.
Horizon also operates year-round hospital “Wheels” programs at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Maryland Hospital for Children, Sinai Children’s Hospital and Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC.
Thank you for joining me as a Walker or by making a gift to send more children to Horizon Day Camp.
